We started the year out with a bang. It was big and bold colours, animal prints, chunky jewellery, and leather. These were not trends, so much as vintage statement pieces with a touch of modernism to set the pace. I picked eight 2021 fashion trends that are booming so far and that I have high hopes for in the future regarding fashion.
1. Crochet
Think about the blankets your granny used to give you, crochet table mats etc. This is what came to my mind when this trend started to emerge. The outcome was better than I could have imagined, from colourful crochet miniskirts and crop tops to bikini tops and bottoms in wild patterns. It was indeed a vibe! You can pair it up with boyfriend jeans or yoga flare pants during the day and switch it up to a matching skirt for the night, even a denim shorts for a beach aesthetic.
2. Sweater Vests
It all forms part of the grandpa aesthetic and we are all here for it! Sweater vests are so comfortable and stylish with minimal effort. You can wear it with a button-down shirt, or a t-shirt underneath paired with a jean, skirt or pants of your choice. The point of the sweater vest is to make a statement with a bold colour/pattern so keep the rest of the look simple yet elegant.
3. Chunky Rings
Colourful jewellery has made a huge comeback on the fashion scene in 2021. Influencers like Ruby Lyn and Emma Chamberlain are all participating in or setting the trend. A lot of celebrities like Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa have also sported these big bold rings on Instagram. These chunky rings are made of materials like resin, acrylic, enamel and even glass. There are pricier variations, but you can look for slightly less expensive versions online or at your nearest thrift store.
4. Beaded Jewellery
Beads have been in style since before the early 2000’s and has made a comeback in 2021. From tiny beads to chunkier more colourful versions, this is a trend that is set. Shops even sell their own bead box sets so you can design your own pieces whether it is necklaces, bracelets, anklets, chokers or waist beads. It is fun and playful and help compliment an outfit in the summer and spring.
5. Shoulder Bags
This is a major y2k comeback and stems from celebrities like Britney Spears to Paris Hilton to Nicole Richie. These small bags come in different sizes and materials and a wide variety of colours. You can easily collect them and match them to your outfits daily.
6. Hair Grips
This has been a 90’s trend and is slowly submerging from 2020 to 2021. Of course, with bold colours, this is a must have accessory to compliment your outfit. Styling your hair with the grip for a full up-do or a half up/half down style can also elevate your look from day to night. If you simply do not need it, you can always grip it to your respective shoulder bag.
7. Baggy Jeans
Oversized denim has always and will always be stylish no matter what era we are in. These days you get balloon jeans, mom jeans, boyfriend jeans and even dad jeans. Each of these style denims have a different personality and bring a different twist to any outfit.
8. Patch work
Is it giving you blanket vibes? For some it is a hit or miss, in this case it has become quite popular and many clothing brands like Shein has taken advantage of this trend. Patch work clothing pieces include tops, jeans, dresses, and jackets etc. Personally, I think this trend is not versatile and might die out soon.
These are all my predictions of what might be popular in 2021 and 2022 thus far. As each of these trends are not for everyone, there are at least one or two things in the list that everyone owns. The point is to stick to your own style or to adjust it to your liking.
