As a fashion enthusiast I try to stray away from trends and fads that die out within a short span of time. I try to stick to clothing items that I feel comfortable in and that radiates my personality in ways that words simply cannot express. But every now and then due to influencers certain clothing items get ushered away because it is no longer trendy, and it died out and that there is simply a new fad taking its place.
I recently watched a You Tube video of a fashion vlogger, Laini Ozark, where she explains “trends that aren’t trendy anymore” meaning she gave a few examples of clothing items that were not trends anymore because it is classic, timeless pieces that will forever be part of a wardrobe. Timeless clothing pieces like leather jackets/coats, denim, Dr.
Martens leather boots and oversized coats. These items have been in style for years in fashion and can be dubbed as vintage classics.
Our fashion is largely influenced by the entertainment industry and social media. On social media we see mainstream influencers promoting sponsored items that are considered “trendy” then die out eventually. In entertainment we see fashion in movies/series and try to take inspiration from it and create a signature style. These days style can be labelled by different aesthetics. You get cottage core, dark academia, e-girl, VSCO girl, Grunge etc. This aesthetics are all based on a certain look and not many want to be labelled as fitting into only one aesthetic.
For me, my own personal style is based on different aesthetics with a hint of vintage classics. I am very inspired by the 70’s and 80’s era of fashion. I like to do my make up based on 90’s looks or even 60’s and being inspired by fashion icons like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe.
The point is that times have changed. These days being stylish is to be able wear any clothing item and making it look trendy and cool, being a trend-setter is as easy as that. Fashion today is more versatile than ever before, leaving room for limitless options of style.
