Fashion Trends That Should Have Stayed in 2020

2020 was an intense year to say the least. With Covid-19 and many issues, the world of fashion did surely not stand still. Due to quarantine, the style on TikTok was comfy yet stylish with a comeback of oversized sweatpants and sweatshirts and hoodies. Comfortable shoes like sneakers and crocs were a staple. Then later that year everything kind of went back to normal but that meant that trendy going-out clothes made a huge comeback ranging from heels to jeans to skirts etc. Some of these trends were outrageous and some were tolerable…to a certain extent. Here are a few trends that I wished would have stayed in 2020.

1. Micro mini bags

In previous years the big bags were trendy but in 2020, the mini bag trend submerged. This was fun at first, minimal yet stylish when going out but later the trend became ridiculous. The bags became insanely small, sold at expensive prices by big name brands and it became impractical. Shoulder bags in return have made a marvellous comeback.

2. Biker shorts as a glamour look

Biker shorts were a big trend during quarantine where short tights were worn with oversized hoodies and sweatshirts and later evolved in a casual daytime look with sneakers and leather/denim jackets. This look was then further evolved in a night-time glamour look paired with tight, stringy crop tops and heels which at first looked cute but later became rather outdated.

3. Tie-Dye

This was also a rising trend during quarantine as tie-dye, pastel sweatpants and sweatshirts/hoodies. These were worn by influencers and celebrities like Justin Bieber and Madison Beer alike. This trend went to t-shirts and loose-fitting pants and later TikTok influencers were sharing videos on how to make your own DIY tie-dye clothing. But this trend died out pretty soon and was replaced by bold colours like hot pink and sage green.

4. Socks with heels

I never really bought into this trend as tempting as it was, it could go horribly wrong as well. Some brands were really stretching this trend but not many succeeded because as quick as it came in, it was old news already. Many thought of it as sloppy and common comparing it to slippers. This year we opt for chunky shoes and heels. Without socks.

5. Bucket hats

Let’s be honest, this trend was good while it lasted. Many influences came from childhood to celebrity to K-Pop and it complimented an outfit well. What I liked about this trend was that it could be worn casually, can be high fashion and could also be worn to the beach. Best of all it protected you from the sun. These days it looks childish as different variations of the design emerged taking the trend too far. Bucket hats can be replaced by basic coloured baseball caps.

6. Fanny packs

These were trendy since the 80’s and 90’s so it was no surprise it came back in the late 2019 into 2020. Vintage and classic clothing is huge in the late 2000’s. Fanny packs were one of them. This was quite handy as it was small and could easily fit in all your important things and just carry it around your waist, it could be used as a belt too. There were even trends that styled it across your body, and it was a huge part of athletic streetwear fashion. I would say fanny packs had its moment but now just like biker shorts it’s been a bit exaggerated.

In my opinion, fashion should have no boundaries or limits and it is all up to preference and comfort in the end. It would not be a crime to wear any of these items in 2021 but it is good to expand your horizons in fashion every now and then and explore different styles.
