Japanese Fashion in 2021

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

Japan is one of the leading countries when it comes to fashion. They have a knack for their original and eccentric trend-setting style. From the streets of Harajuku, a vibrant world opens filled with high end fashion and the best designer brands. Japan is so fashion-forward that it’s no surprise that they influence many worldwide on clothing. I did some research and came across eight top trends in Japan in 2021: masks, wide leg pants, cropped blazers, coatigans, joggers, plaid on plaid, mixing and matching bold colours and lastly bubblegum pink.

1. Masks

Even before Covid-19, masks were worn in this country to protect yourself and others from illness and purely out of respect for individuals. These days there are many different designs of masks, surgical masks in different colours, branded masks, masks that mould to your face etc.

Now instead of it just keeping you safe in times of a pandemic, it is also seen as a fashion statement that is taken very seriously in this country.

2. Wide Leg Pants

Say goodbye to skinny jeans or any tight-fitting pants and hello to wide leg pants! These types of pants are complementary to any body type and can be paired with a cardigan or coat and high or flat shoes and even an old vintage t-shirt. The possibilities are endless.

3. Cropped Blazer

This has recently become a staple in style and is best styled with high-waisted pants/jeans. It became extremely popular with the rise of the high-waisted, oversized jeans and the combination compliments each other beautifully. Pair it up with a pair of sneakers or chunky Chelsea boots.

4. Coatigans

This piece of clothing is a cross between a coat and a cardigan. It has the length and design of a coat while the fabric and pattern are that of a cardigan and is slightly lighter than your normal coat but slightly heavier than your average cardigan. This style gained popularity in early 2020 and just became more prominent in 2021. It can be paired with a long-pleated skirt and some cowboy boots, and you can compliment it with statement earrings for a bolder look.

5. Joggers

It might seem quite simple but this athletic jogger bottoms are considered high fashion when paired with the right clothing pieces. The joggers with the two stripes on the side are the most popular and are mostly paired with chunky sneakers and an oversized camel coat.

6. Plaid on Plaid

This trend is all about mixing two different types of plaid and making it work by complimenting the colours and keeping the rest of the outfit including the accessories simple.

7. Mix and Match Bold Colours

Spring in 2021 is all about bold colours and mixing them and solely remembering to complement each other by following the “colour-wheel rule”.

The best way to do this is by creating a colour block but beware this is a trend that can quickly go from a thumbs-up to a thumbs-down. If you do not want to overdo it stick to a minimum of 2 to 3 colours and style accordingly.

8. Bubblegum Pink

This colour has been trending all year and has been spotted on the runways of both Gucci and Chanel. The colour is both playful and vibrant and gives any look a cute, soft touch. It is best paired with neutrals like white or beige, that really make the colour stand out or pop.

The world of fashion is fast pacing and sometimes it is hard to keep up with the trends. Japan itself has a way of making trends stick and sets the tone for many fashion trends around the world.
